FALLING FOR FALL
by Catherine Spinley
We don't want to burst your Summer bubble but Fall is only six weeks away. Let that sink in for a moment. Just like you, we're *wishing* and *hoping* for a little more time to enjoy meals al fresco or to plan one last beach weekend but, when the first cold spell arrives, we want to be ready to roll out of bed in the morning and dress in our favorite staples from last year while also infusing a little newness into the mix - some trends that have us...Falling for Fall (Fall 2019, to be specific).
INSPIRED BY ICE CREAM
Pistachio is more than an ice cream flavor; it’s the color of fall. not to be confused by the Mint trend that blew through our closets a few years back, this trending shade of green is moodier and more sophisticated, with a little grey mixed in for a dirtier, muted effect. Anything pistachio will pair perfectly with denim, black, brown, camel, even red (we promise!). This snuggly sweater is on our list for fall. Not a fan of pistachio? Millennial Lilac is a strong contender for the color of the season and it’s as regal as an American Duchess.
ONCE BITTEN TWICE SHY ROMANCE
While romance isn’t dead, per se, it’s currently held together by some emotional Crazy Glue, klonopin and optimism. Bad Romance is everywhere for autumn. Think dark, dramatic, inky colors in lush fabrics punctuated with ruffles, lace or EMBROIDERY, toughened up by heartbreak or rather zippers, leather, clunky boots and asymmetrical silhouettes. STUDYING THE CLASSICS
WE all had that professor, the one who looked straight out of central casting with his tweed blazer (with suede elbow patches, of course), tortoise shell glasses,a 3-day scruff and battered bucks. We weren’t into him like the rest of the class but iambic pentameter was never really our thing anyway (don’t tell a soul). So, when Celine Came along this fall all hot for teacher, sexy academia, we felt something…tingly. Suddenly we went gaga for tweeds, checks, felted wool blazers and earth tones galore. We like to think we’re paying homage to Ali MacGraw in love story or the eternal robin williams as John keating in dead poet’s society rather than leading the revival of the official preppy handbook (i.e. You don’t have to look like a frigid housewife. Don’t believe us? Here. WE TOLD YOU. So. THE classics never die, do they?
GOOD AS GOLD (OR SILVER, OR BRONZE)
Metallics are everywhere. head to toe gilded age golds, icy silvers, and rosy-hued bronzes that make a statement. Drape yourself in monotone metallics or go subtle with the statement: a luxurious barrette (we love Deborah Pagani), or a lush scarf like this one (DYING FOR IT!) paired with a simple black turtleneck and denim. Prefer to splurge on a nice pair of heels? OR MAYBE YOU JUST NEED THIS BEAUTY. we feel you. We really do.
animal print is an evergreen trend. Sure the de rigueur print may shift but go ahead and consider animal print a neutral, something foundational in your closet. YEt, so many people shy away from this trend and we get it. The wrong print, the wrong scale and suddenly you’re channeling Peg bundy. some things to think about: mixing animal print patterns is v. tricky, silhouette is important (a tight, short mini dress in an animal print may not read as chic), and cheap fabric is always an outfit killer but is even worse when it’s an animal print and, if you’re still hesitant, accessories are the best way to incorporate animal print in a subtle way. Now that you’re ready to embrace your inner tiger, here are some great pieces: This splurge-worthy leopard trench coat, or a great body suit with a black deniM, high-waisted pant, and you won’t be able to resist this sweet dress’ take on tiger.
NEON and On and on…
Every few years, neon just happens, usually when least suspected. we still haven’t figured out why neon nail polish isn’t shiny yet here we are pondering purchasing neon knits and other bits. We’re either gluttons for punishment or trend-resilient,who knows? What we’re sure of? This DAY-GLO Orange sweateR and nike Air Force 1 sneakers (Not together. But, you knew that already).
