Springtime in Paris. Spring cleaning. Spring flings. Demeter preparing the earth for her daughter Persephone’s return. There is an air of hope that arrives on the first day of spring, one that carries us into the joyous and lazy days of summer. Dressed in layers, we disrobe as the sun peaks and redress as it sets. As the flowers and trees bloom, we rejoice as color returns to our lives. We are wide-eyed and ready. Every single year. The spring beauty trends we’re seeing reflect the spirit of that renewal and joy. Goodbye heavy foundation, hello dewy skin. Angry eyebrows look softer and happier paired with pastel monochromatic eye shadows. Here are seven spring trends to try:

We’ve all heard the term “glass skin,” and yes, we’d like to emulate that perfectly reflective skin but, it’s a hard look to achieve. More attainable is a slightly glossy complexion look that allows you to conceal blemishes and correct discoloration while still having skin that looks natural. This is not a blingy, strobing glow but a subtle, healthy sheen on skin.

How to get the look:

  • Add a pea size amount of liquid highlighter to you moisturizer or to any light coverage foundation or tinted moisturizer. (Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector is the original liquid highlighter)

  • Use a pinpoint concealing brush to spot conceal any blemishes or scars with a matte concealer. Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer is thick and matte enough to conceal a pimple and this brush is superb for covering tiny bumps.

  • Conceal under eye circles or discoloration as needed but do not use a flat, matte concealer, as it will negate the glowiness you’ve already crafted. Try NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer.

  • If your skin is oily, lightly powder ONLY in the places that get greasy throughout the day

There’s a fine line between a sophisticated, soft blurred lip and a messy, smudged one. The former is easy to get - promise!

How to get the look (two ways):

  • Always skip the lip liner. The NYX Powerpuff Lippie (not sponsored) is the perfect product to use for this look. It’s moisturizing but matte, completely blurs lip lines, and comes in 16 colors. For added blur take a small lip brush and lightly trace the outer lip line (where you’d apply lip liner) to make sure there are no crisp lines.

You need not buy anything to achieve a blurred look. Start with dry but healthy, moisturized lips. If your lips are chapped, apply lip balm at the start of the morning and wipe off when it’s time to apply this lip look. Take a small makeup brush like this one, and brush your favorite blush across your lips evenly. Add a little more in the center of lips if you want that editorial ombre look. Once your done, clean brush by wiping  off excess blush on a tissue and then run the brush on the outer lip line and across the Cupid’s Bow so the color subtly blends into skin around the lips. Add a matte lip balm to finish the look.

Not long ago, any warm color besides brown or beige on the eye was intimidating to apply. By the time I was done, the look screamed conjunctivitis. After lots of practice and even more blending, I’ve gotten into warmer eye looks. I nearly missed my connecting flight in the Madrid airport because I was hell-bent on procuring the Chanel Candeur Et Expérience -286 eye palette. For spring, warm eyes are still around but the colors are softer and monochromatic, which means a few things: 1) eyeshadow singles are back! 2) less blending 3) you can wear eye shadow and still get to work on time.

How to get the look:

  • If using a powder shadow, prime the eyelid. Skip this step when using a pencil or creme shadow.

  • Apply pastel color from lid to just above the crease line. Shape color to wing outwards and upwards at the outside edge. Blend any harsh lines and edges. Try Colourpop’s Animal or Ripple - pastels perfect for spring.

  • Apply a shimmering shadow or highlighter to brow bone and inner corner of eyes.

A very light application of mascara finishes the look; try a lifting formula that separates lashes and keeps the look simple like Glossier’s Lash Slick.

Invite a deep, soulful stare with bold and voluminous lashes on a bare eye. It’s low maintenance that appears high maintenance. It’s eight hours of sleep faked. It’s easy.

How to get the look:

Give the lashes a thorough curl. Our secret is two-fold: the Troy Surratt Relevee Lash Curler slightly heated with a hair dryer to give lashes that unbelievable, all day curl followed by a volumizing mascara. We’ve got so many favorites: Dior Diorshow mascara, L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara and Lancome Monsieur Big mascara are great for this look.

Hair styling isn’t my strong suit. It’s why my hair spent the better part of a decade in a bun. However, thanks to Kim Kardashian, Hailey Bieber and the rest of the famous kids on Instagram these days, slicked hair is back but with a little more style and movement. Luckily, It’s super simple and my new go-to style when a shower is mandatory but a styling session is impossible.

How to get the look:

Use a Wet Brush or wide tooth comb to brush wet hair. Part as usual or slick straight back. Apply a quarter size dollop of gel to hair (more for longer strands), comb through and let air dry. Try applying a small amount of hairspray to ends of hair to lock in wet look.

In a direct clap black to the contoured, nude faces of  past few seasons, bright, poppy blush is baaaaaack. In a big, huge, gigantic way.

How to get the look:

It’s applied to the apples of the cheeks for a youthful flush or draped upwards towards the temples for a dramatic statement. There are colorful powders, gels, creams and stains - all ready to make you look happy and healthy. We recommend powder, stains and gel formulations if you have oily skin and cream formulations for dry skin types. A few favorites are: Giorgio Armani Beauty Neo Nude A-Blush, Rituel de Fille Inner Glow Creme Pigment (clean formula) or Buxom Primer-Infused Wanderlust Blush.

It was bound to happen; matte, oversaturated lips broke us (or rather, broke our lips). There is a movement towards touchable, kissable, healthy lips doused in  lip gloss, preferably one that nourishes while it sparkle; a perfect Spring rebirth.

How to get the look:

Get your lips back into shape. For super-chapped lips, a lip mask is a must. The Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask comes in five colors and alone can act as your go-to lip gloss. Another nourishing, shiny product is the NARS Orgasm Afterglow Lip Balm . For a traditional gloss, how could we not mention Fenty Beauty’s Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer in FU$$Y or in Fenty Glow?
